Bring your daypack, book a picnic basket with tasty homemade “goodies” and have lunch while enjoying a panorama of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. The mountain is part of 44 000 hectares of protected nature reserve and guests can choose to do a long or short walk on top of the mountain. Once again a picnic of homemade delicacies can be enjoyed anywhere along the route. Add to this a bottle of wine or bubbly for the perfect spread. Picnic baskets are equipped with plates, utensils, and glasses. Available for R425 for 2 people (not including wine – bring your own or we can supply).

There are trails on the farm with a few technical bits. 5kms along the shoulder of the R24 gives you access to many kilometers of dirt roads including Breedt’s Nek, Buffelspoort dam and Hekpoort. For the not so energetic adventure seekers, there are several trails through forest and across the veld. With a daypack, this can be interrupted by a stop for a restorative picnic. Bring your own bikes.

Phefumula is surrounded on three sides by game farms, the fourth open to the mountain and the Magaliesberg Protected Nature Environment. There are many animals that may be seen on walks or rides. These include raptors and this part of the range is home to the rare and splendid Back Eagle as well as abundant bird life. A number of different antelope species may often be seen; from kudu to the smaller antelope such as mountain reedbuck and duiker. Quaint warthogs are also frequently encountered. Monkeys and baboons are to be seen all over the farm but mostly on the mountain slopes. A few lucky people have had the privilege of spotting the timid leopard, which is still found in these mountains.

This is a wonderful and interesting area for keen photographers with opportunities to capture mountains, spectacular scenery and sunsets, birdlife and plants

Phefumula is on a route, which encompasses many cultural activities, art and craft shops and places of interest.
Historical sites — The entire area is steeped in history, including ancient Iron Age and Anglo Boer War sites. The Blaaubank mine situated in Magaliesburg is one of the oldest gold mines in South Africa.
